The Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate develops systems, concepts and technologies to enhance the Air Force's capability to successfully meet the challenges of the information age. We develop and integrate programs to acquire data. We find better ways to store, process and fuse data to make it into information. Finally, we create means to deliver and present tailored information to allow the military decision-maker to have the total sphere of information needs for successful operations worldwide
Headquartered in Rome, New York, the Directorate sustains the finest laboratory and research facilities found anywhere. The majority of Directorate researchers have earned advanced degrees, typically in computer science and engineering.
The Directorate’s areas of investigation are organized by Core Technical Competencies (CTCs). There are seven key CTCs: Information Exploitation, Information Fusion and Understanding, Information Management, Advanced Computing Architectures, Cyber Operations, Command and Control, and Connectivity.
All four of the Directorate’s technical or “Mission” Divisions participate in the Summer Faculty Fellowship Program: the Information Grid Division, the Advanced Computing Division, the Information and Intelligence Exploitation Division, and the Information System Division. This research program is also supported by the Information Institute, a collaboration of over 60 large and small academic institutions, and the Information Directorate.
